How to become a professional singer

In the world of successful singers, it is not always obvious who has what it takes to make it to the top. We tend to think that those with the greatest musical ability or the absolute best voices will make a living as vocalists, but that simply isn’t the case.

If your dream is to become a successful professional singer, you certainly need to undergo years of vocal lessons. Even so, that will not guarantee that those with the best voices will reach the top. Often the most promising students fall by the wayside for lack of the attributes associated with success. Indeed, many of those who do best don’t have the best voices, but they know what they are capable of, they know how to present a song and they know how to work an audience.

And most of all, they have the tenacity to chase their dreams.

To have the best chance of being a successful professional… and that does not necessarily mean being a top recording artist or a world-renowned entertainer… following these strategies will give you a sound start and teach you a great deal of what to expect and what you need to do. The rest is entirely up to you.

Know yourself, your strengths and your limitations.

  1. Do you have the requisite talent to achieve your goal? If you are uncertain, take advice from an expert teacher or a successful professional artist.
  2. Do you really believe in yourself? The road to success is long and bumpy. You will need to believe in yourself so much that you will have the resilience to withstand occasional failure and criticism.
  3. Do you have the passion to “go all the way”? You need to love what you do absolutely and be single-minded about your quest for success. Whenever you are faced with rejection and disappointment, you will need to pick yourself up and continue along your pathway to success.
  4. Do you have a strong work ethic? No one ever achieved excellence or became successful without hard work. A good voice will only become an excellent voice through hard, unrelenting work.
  5. Are you prepared to take advice? Even the artists at the very top of their game return regularly to a favourite teacher or mentor to seek assistance and advice. Honest and knowledgeable advice from those who really know will help you to stay ahead of the pack.

Develop a technique that will support your long-term goals

  1. Study with a good teacher. Some aspiring artists resort to online courses to learn to sing. This is not the best course of action unless you already have a good idea of what you are doing. There is no substitute for an excellent one-on-one teacher for mastering the technique necessary to sustain a lifelong career.
  2. Practise every single day. It can never be stressed enough that the best professionals have only achieved their amazing level of proficiency and excellence through regular, effective practice. By the time you are ready for a career, you should be practising for a couple of hours a day, spread throughout the day. Warm up with technical exercises and vocalises in the morning, sing through repertoire a couple of hours later, and in the afternoon, work on the more difficult parts of your repertoire or on new repertoire. A routine such as this should be a regular habit.
  3. Internalise the elements of vocal health and observe them habitually. Understanding potential singers’ vocal problems and avoiding the habits which could cause them, will lengthen your career. Establish a good vocal health routine and adhere to it. Above all, do not abuse your voice. It is your livelihood and you must protect it at all costs.

Release your inner star… discover your strengths at our Free Vocal Consultation…

Many prospective students like to try a complimentary one-off 45-minute consultation lesson first, to decide whether this is what they are looking for, or to gain some valuable feedback from the teacher about their present ability and what they might expect after a period of regular lessons. Gordon will assess your vocal ability, find out what you want from your singing future and talk with you about how private lessons can help you achieve your goals. There is no obligation to continue with regular lessons after the introductory session but most students are so delighted with their progress that they want to sign up for a Private Vocal Study Course.
